Rampage Jackson, "I'm done fighting."

Quinton "Rampage" Jackson announced on his blog today that he is going
to quit fighting. Here is the entry from his blog in full:

"The UFC has done a lot for me but I think I have done more for them. The UFC bought WFA to get my contract & they saved my life, so I felt loyal to them. They pushed me into a fight with Chuck Liddel even when I clearly stated I wasn't ready to fight for the belt because the American fans didn't know me but I took the fight and didn't complain & after I won the American fans booed me for the first time which changed the way I saw them & it hurt me deeply.

Then before I can even get out of the cage they announced that I was fighting Dan Henderson without even asking me. After I beat Dan Henderson, I made history in becoming the first undisputed champion in MMA but was never even given the pride belt in the cage & I was never promoted as the undisputed champ. Later Anderson Silva was.

Then they had me coach TUF season 7 and fight Forrest and the fight was very controversial & normally when a fight is that close & controversial there is normally an instant replay. I can name a couple of instances. Instead they offered me the Vanderlei Silva fight which I gladly accepted even though I know it was a very risky fight for me to take because of all the drama that was happening to me at the time. I fought that fight with a jaw injury and then a couple weeks later Dana called me and asked me to fight Rashad. For the first time I said no, I didn't want to fight because it was such short notice & I wouldn't have had a long break between camp. Dana talked me into fighting Rashad anyway but Rashad refused the fight and so I had to fight Jardine as a favor to the UFC instead of getting my belt back(which wasn't even worth it to me financially).

Then I reinjured my jaw in the fight with Vanderlei & Jardine. Frank Mir gets hurt so they wanted to switch my fight from UFC 100 to the fight Frank couldn't make it to but I couldn't fight cause I needed jaw surgury. So they give Machida the fight against Rashad & they told me they want me to coach TUF season 10 against Rashad. That's why I wanted Rashad to win so bad but when Rashad got knocked out I told them I wanted to fight Machida for the belt but Dana told me if I coach TUF against Rashad that I could fight Machida afterwards cause this was a different type of ultimate fighter show they were doing. After I signed the contract Dana then changes his mind & says I have to fight Rashad & even told me what to say in the press & so my fans think I was scared to fight Machida. After all that I still never complained & I did it all.

Then this movie role came about that I have been trying to get for over a year & as soon as I found out I was close to getting it, I called Dana right away & asked to push the Memphis fight back just a month or so. I told him what this movie role meant to me. I told him that I used to bond with my father watching the tv show as a kid when my parents where still married & it represents the memories I had with my father when we lived together. My dad became an alcohalic & addicted to drugs & we grew apart. But after my dad got his life back together, I was so proud of my dad & I told him I would always take care of him in the future & make him proud of me. My dad & I are still very big fans of the show & I am basically doing this for the childhood memories I had spending time in front of the tv with my dad. Dana went on the internet & mocked me because of that & I still did nothing. Dana & I finally talked & we made up & then after that he went back on the internet & said some bullshit & he was talking bad about the movie when information is not even supposed to be released & talking about payments which is not even true could really hurt my future acting career, which could very well last longer than my fighting career. I'm not like Randy Couture. My body has been getting so many different injuries that I wont be able to fight until my forties & neither do I want to fight that long. So I feel like my second career could be in jeopardy.. so I'm done fighting. I've been getting negative reviews from the dumb ass fans that don't pay my bills or put my kids though college. So I'm hanging it up. I'm gonna miss all my loyal fans but hopefully they'll follow me to my new career & I will gain more loyal fans along the way. & all you hater fans out there can kiss my big black hairy ass! & anybody that don't like what I just said can come try to kick my ass!

I still feel the UFC is a great organization and I felt like I was very loyal to them but they didn't respect my loyalty but I wish the UFC the best. I did a lot of things for them. I wish no bad blood between us but I have kids & a family back in Memphis to provide for & thats all that matters to me!"

Junior dos Santos Puts on a Dominating Performance

At UFC 103 Junior dos Santos put on a possibly bone crushing performance. Anyone that had a doubt about the conditioning or the actual talent of Junior dos Santos got all of those questions answered on Saturday. At the end of the night, there wasn't a doubt in anyones' mind about the type of fighter he is and that he is a legitamate contender.

Junior dos Santos put on a showing of dominance as he verbally submitted MMA legend Mirko 'Cro Cop' Filipovic. Dos santos had never made it out of the first round, leaving questions about his conditioning, but he put those questions to bed. Halfway through the third and final round, dos Santos started teeing off with huge lunging knees to the stomach and chest, then he connected with a vicious right uppercut that left Cro Cop saying he couldn't see. After getting his hand raised, he said he would face anyone that the UFC and the fans wanted him to fight.

For those of you who didn't get to see the season premiere of The Ultimate Fighter: Heavyweights, you missed one of the bloodiest battles in the show's history. In this fight Rampage picked his fighter Abe Wagner to go against Team Rashad's Jon Madsen. Madsen is a wrestling specialist and Wagner is known for having very little wrestling skill. In an interview with Fighters Only Magazine Anderson Silva said that he was not having surgery and he was interested in fighting Frank Mir. Here is some of the article from Fighters Only where Silva touches on the issues:

"UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva was [at Bitetti Combat 4] as a VIP guest and our Brazilian Fighters Only correspondent sat down with ‘The Spider’ for a quick talk.

He denied having any kind of elbow injury, is not booked for surgery and says he is surprised that such reports are circulating.

“I don’t know anything at all about any elbow injury,” he said, adding with a laugh, “I wonder who hurt me?”

The UFC is set to match Frank Mir against Cheick Kongo in a heavyweight clash at UFC 107. Anderson had been quoted as saying he wanted to fight Mir at heavyweight and he is still ready for that match.

“I’m 200 percent healthy and there’s no injury. UFC can set the next fight whenever they want, I’m ready. I’m interested in fighting Frank Mir. He can be the next one,” he says.

UFC president Dana White said this week that Silva would not be fighting at heavyweight unless he first cleans out the 205lb division (which would mean a meeting with his close friend Lyoto Machida). "

NCAA Football AP Poll - Week 3

ASSOCIATED PRESS - After a season on the outs, Michigan is back in the AP Top 25.

The Wolverines, unranked all last season while finishing 3-9, were No. 25 in The Associated Press college football poll released Sunday.

Michigan moved into the media ranking for the first time since the end of the 2007 season after a thrilling 38-34 victory against Notre Dame on Saturday. The loss dropped the Fighting Irish out of the rankings.

Florida remained No. 1 after it's second landslide victory. The Gators received 56 first-place votes. Texas is still No. 2, with one first-place vote.

No. 3 Southern California received a first-place vote for the first time this season after Matt Barkley and the Trojans used a late-fourth quarter touchdown to rally past Ohio State 18-15 on the road.

The Buckeyes' latest slip up on the big stage -- they've lost six straight against top-five teams -- cost them three spots in the poll. They dropped to No. 11.

No. 4 Alabama received two first-place votes. Mississippi and Penn State tied for No. 5.

Oklahoma State took the biggest dive. The Cowboys reached the top five last week for the first time in 24 years, but they were upset 45-35 at home by Case Keenum and Houston.

Oklahoma State tumbled 11 places to No. 16.

No. 21 Houston joined Michigan as newcomers to this season's rankings, but unlike the Wolverines it's been years since the Cougars were a Top 25 team.

Houston's last time in the AP poll was Sept. 15, 1991. That year quarterback David Klingler and the Cougars were 1-0 and ranked 10th when they went to Miami and were blown out 40-10 by the Hurricanes. The next week Houston was No. 21 when it lost to 51-10 at Illinois.

The Cougars haven't been a player on the national scene since.

No. 7 BYU moved up two spots and also has its best ranking in more than a decade. The Cougars from Provo, Utah, were last ranked this high when they finished the 1996 season No. 5.

California, LSU and Boise State round out the top 10.

Michigan's victory, coming on a touchdown pass by freshman Tate Forcier with 11 seconds left, is the most significant of Rich Rodriguez's one-plus seasons as coach. And moving into the national rankings capped a tumultuous and exhilarating three weeks in Ann Arbor for the program.

The week before Michigan opened the season with a 31-7 victory at the Big House against Western Michigan, Rodriguez was rocked by a newspaper report that anonymously quoted current and former players alleging NCAA violations by the coaching staff.

Now Michigan is back in the national rankings, a place fans of college football's winningest program have grown accustomed to occupying, and headed for a soft spot on the schedule. The Wolverines play Eastern Michigan and Indiana at home before a trip to East Lansing for rival Michigan State on Oct. 3.

The forecast for the Wolverines is looking good. Just ask Forcier, who said this when asked if the Notre Dame victory proved that Michigan is really back as a Big Ten power: "Yeah, I really think it does."

Ohio State starts the second 10, followed by Oklahoma, Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech and TCU.

After Oklahoma State at 16, Cincinnati is No. 17, Utah is 18th and Nebraska and Miami finish off the top 20.

Houston, the first team from Conference USA to be ranked this season, Kansas, Georgia, North Carolina and Michigan are the final five.

Roger Huerta will be fighting Gray Maynard at UFC Fight Night 19 in the last fight of his UFC contract. He will be pursuing an acting career, but hopes to return to the UFC at some point.

‘Can he make it his best?’ Roger ‘El Matador’ Huerta takes on Gray ‘The Bully’ Maynard in the last fight on his UFC contract.

On September 16, 2009, former top lightweight fighter, Roger Huerta, will go up against top lightweight prospect Gray Maynard at UFC Fight Night 19 located at the Cox Convention Center in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Huerta (20-2-1), a vicious well-rounded fighter, has 11 wins by (T)KOs, 4 by submission, 4 decisions and 1 by other means. His UFC record is 6-1-0, and his only los was to the recently removed top contender, Kenny Florian.

Huerta faces a tough opponent in the form of Maynard (7-0-0). Maynard was a semifinalist on The Ultimate Fighter 5, losing that fight to the eventual winner Nathan Diaz. one of his victories was a 9 second Ko against Joe Veres. However, Maynard has won 5 of his 7 fights through unanimous decisions.

Huerta will look to utilize his experience and striking skills, as he has the advantages there. Maynard is a great wrestler with a ton of stamina.

They both have good all-around skills, but you can be sure that Huerta will want to go out with a big bang. This fight could easily end up being Fight of the Night.

NFL Week 1 - Pick 5

Every week I will run down a list of five games from the upcoming NFL action and make my picks on those. I started last week with college football on my Twitter page (be sure to follow the blog on Twitter too) and I was a perfect 5-0. The highlight pick from last week was the BYU over Oklahoma upset that many called me crazy for. My picks are just straight up not against the spread.

There are a lot of interesting games on the schedule this week and it was hard to pick only five, but hopefully I picked the right ones and I'll start the NFL pick 'em season off right.

Dallas Cowboys over Tampa Bay Buccaneers
I had to start off with a game that I felt 100% with. The Cowboys travel to Tampa Bay against a very weak team. Dallas is looking to come back strong after a very disappointing season and I expect them to beat up on a young and inexperienced defense. DeMarcus Ware should also have a huge game rushing Byron Leftwich who just might be the most immobile quarterback in the league. I feel bad for the young Buccaneers as they will be clearly outmatched and will suffer a two touchdown defeat.

Houston Texans over New York Jets
I am a huge fan of Mark Sanchez, but his team may be in for a long day. The Jets outside linebacker Calvin Pace is currently under suspension and that forced Rex Ryan to place Vernon Gholston into the starting line-up. That is a disaster. Gholston was a workout warrior at the 2008 Combine, but he really has shown minimal football skill at this point in this career. Gholston cannot get off blocks and if by the glory of God he does, he can't tackle anything. The Texans should take full advantage of this and run straight at Gholston with Steve Slaton. If you're a fantasy owner, START STEVE SLATON! He is in for a huge day.

Cincinnati Bengals over Denver Broncos
This will be Josh McDaniels first test in a meaningful game as head coach. If this is anything like he has shown to this point, he will not control his players and the team will crumble. The Bengals finally have a healthy Carson Palmer back and Chad Ochocinco claims that this team will win 12 games this season. While I wouldn't go that far, I still have them finishing second in the AFC North this season and they will be the surprise team of the NFL. The Broncos are horrid on defense and the Bengals have a very solid unit. Carson Palmer and Chad Ochocinco should connect early and often in what could end up as a blowout.

Chicago Bears over Green Bay Packers
I touched on Josh McDaniels debut in the last game and this time it's all about his ex-quarterback. Jay Cutler and the Bears will be going in to a hostile environment on Sunday night against a division rival. Both of these teams have the potential to win the NFC North and this is a critical early season game. While many believe the Packers are poised for a great season I am not so sure. The transition to the 3-4 defense looked good so far, but that was preseason. I expect Jay Cutler to sit back and carve up the Packers aging secondary. Look for Earl Bennett to start the season off with a big game to start off his break out season.

UPSET PICK: San Francisco 49ers over Arizona Cardinals
The Cardinals went 0-4 this preseason. While that is no indication of how the season will play out (the Lions were 4-0 last preseason), only 5 teams that have gone 0-4 in preseason have made the post season in over a decade. Arizona has a lot of new faces on the coaching staff and Larry Fitzgerald needs to worry about that damned Madden Curse. The Cardinals defense is also a crap shoot... which unit will we get? The D was awful during the regular season, but spectacular in the postseason. The last defensive unit to make that drastic of a change was the Indianapolis Colts in their Super Bowl run. The D returned to it's below average form the following season. If the 49ers can get off to a quick start with the running game I think they will be able to control the pace of the game and dominate the Cardinals defensive front. Shaun Hill is a proven leader and tight end Vernon Davis has made a turnaround as he now looks to finally be the productive receiving threat the team has looked for. I expect the Cardinals to start off 0-1 and they will go on to miss the playoffs.

Attention: The Lingerie Football League is for real!

A lot of people were not entirely sure what to expect from the Lingerie Football League. They looked at it and saw pretty women in lingerie and automatically dismissed the notion that there would be any talent involved. They were incredibly wrong.

Last night there was a game between the San Diego Seduction and Seattle Mist. While it was an entertaining game with Seattle winning 20-6, I couldn't help but look back and remember how great last weeks game was.

In the LFL opener the girls of the Miami Caliente traveled to play the Chicago Bliss. This game was a great way to start off the inaugural season of the LFL. Chicago ended up winning 29-19 and there was no shortage of action in the game.

The hits were hard and all the players on the field proved to be highly skilled athletes. You have to give it up for the toughness they show out there as well. The only padding the players wear are small shoulder pads, lacrosse-style helmets, knee and elbow pads and that doesn't stop them from going all out.

I'm really looking forward to the rest of the action throughout the season and I highly recommend everyone check out as many games as you can. The video above shows some highlights from the Miami Caliente vs Chicago Bliss season opener and you can see the skill and intensity. The girls aren't backing down for anyone.

Mayhem Miller Brings Douchebaggery to a New Level

At the end of last month I wrote this post about Bully Beatdown on MTV being as staged as The Hills. The host of the show did not appreciate the article and he responded to me via his Twitter page by saying, "retard. I said all that jokingly."

First, I would like to thank Mayhem for calling me a retard while using one word sentences. It is a great way to get your point across. Perhaps Mayhem could have come up with a few other clever one-liners, but the script writers for his show were apparently not available at the time.

Here is a part of the article that Mayhem decided to call out. "When watching MTV's Bully Beatdown you have to think to yourself, is this real? The level of douchebaggery that is littered throughout the show is overwhelming. Whether it be from the host, Jason "Mayhem" Miller, to the so called "bullies," the show is so obviously scripted. What else should we expect from an MTV "reality" show though."

The article quoted some people who claimed to have had friends inside of production. The strongest quote read, "I spoke with a friend that helped with the production of the show and was told that most of the bully/victim combo had never even met prior to the taping of each episode."

I never once said in the article that Mayhem himself admitted the show was fake, which he seemed to have believed. In fact it looks like the retard here may be the one who did not do any reading, but instead assumed. Did you ever learn in school what happens when you assume, Jason?

What Mr. Miller thought I was referring to in the previous post was his self-proclaimed "EPIC TROLL" post that he posted on The UG. In that post Mayhem said,

Everyone on it is actors. Everyone involved
with the show knows that it
is fake and we script pretty much everything
that comes out of their
mouth. I have not yet got an executive producer
credit, or a writer's
credit- but I write the bully's dialouge myself. I

suppossedly doing
so well done that we will be getting a season two. Makes
my stomach
hurt that I'm selling this slop. I'm sorry"

Of course this genius did not stop here. He went on during his Myspace blog to explain his oh so clever idea.

Mayhem admits that he doesn't care if people think "bully beardown" [and I am the retarded one?] is fake. Apparently "Bully Beardown" is a show still in production. One can only hope that Jason steps into a cage with a bear. I could only wish that MTV would pick up that idea. Jason fighting bears would enjoyable to watch, especially if he took a troop of his Japanese school girls into the cage with him.

To be fair, I will post the end of Jason's rant. He said,

"Internet nitpickers and rollerbladers, who we poked fun at in
an
episode have come out claiming the show is fake, but its legit. Are the
bully's douchebags? Yep? Do they want to be on tv? Hell yes. They all
really think they can beat my pro-fighter too. Yes, you don't have to

the Bully Beatdown tell all, right there, let's see if the fruit-booters put
THAT on their website...

No one is questioning the fact that the "bullies" get the hell beat out of them, but the dialogue in between segments is clearly staged. Daunte Culpepper issues statement on Matt Stafford

There were multiple reports over the weekend mentioning that many Detroit Lions players were hoping for Daunte Culpepper to win the quarterback job. Culpepper has gone ahead and issued a statement in support of Coach Jim Schwartz's decision and he fully supports starter Matt Stafford. The statement reads:

"Now that the debate is over and the decision has been made regarding the starting quarterback in Detroit, I would like to make the following statement today so that tomorrow I can put all of my energy into helping our team prepare for our opponent.

"The reason I agreed to restructure my contract in order to stay in Detroit was because I knew that I would have a chance to have a full off-season for the first time in over three years. I also knew that I would have an opportunity to finally compete against whoever the Lions brought in whether via free agency, trade or the draft. When the Lions selected Matthew Stafford first overall I was excited.

"My position is that if you want to be the best you have to beat the best. Coach Schwartz gave me a fair opportunity to compete for the starting job and now the decision has been made that Matt is the best quarterback in Detroit. I support the decision and I am ready to settle into my role.

"Matt is a great guy and a talented young quarterback. I am confident that he will lead this team to plenty of victories in Detroit for a long time to come. I look forward to helping Matt in that mission in any way that I can this year. My role as his back-up is not to be seen unless needed and not to be heard from unless required. The Lions organization has treated me with respect and class and they can expect the same from me. "

It is great to see Culpepper speak out and give his full support. He can prove to be a very important part of Matt Stafford's development if he keeps this stance and becomes a mentor for Stafford. My hats off to Culpepper for saying all the right things and I thank him for not causing another "schism."

Dana White shares his thought's on Rampage Jackson ditching UFC 107 for a movie

Rampage Jackson first turned down his title shot with Lyoto Machida to appear as a coach on The Ultimate Fighter 10: Heavyweights against his rival Rashad Evans. It is now widely being reported that Rampage has decided to pull out of that fight to do his best Mr. T impersonation as B.A. Baracus in a film remake of "The A-Team."

UFC commissioner Dana White has never been one to bite his tongue and he has sounded off on Rampage being in the film.

"I hate it with a [expletive] passion," White said when asked about UFC fighters who take movie roles. "'You're a fighter; you're not a movie star.' It's so [expletive] funny because fighters want to be movie stars, and movie stars want to act like they're fighters. 'Get a [expletive] grip. You're a fighter, and you're a [expletive] movie star. Alright?'"

'Guess what Rashad Evans is thinking about right now,'" White said he plans to tell Jackson. "'He's thinking about beating your [expletive] ass. He's not sitting around thinking about how him and his mom used to watch the [expletive] 'Love Boat' together and (how) he wants to get the role of Isaac the bartender."

"'Get a [expletive] grip, dude. You're going to make a lot of money. You ain't going to make a lot of money playing B.A. Baracus on 'The A-Team.' Jesus Christ. This [expletive] drives me [expletive] nuts.' So yeah, I'm not a big fan of fighters doing movies. When your career is over, if you turn into a movie star, that's awesome."

So it is very clear that Dana White is not happy with Rampage deciding on the movie. I am not a fan of the move either. Rampage has said that he wants his belt back. I think it is time to put your money where your mouth is and step in the cage against Rashad. Rampage spent a season hyping up a fight with Rashad only to go for Hollywood? Unacceptable.

What makes matters worse is that Rampage has publicly made fun of Forrest Griffin on his Twitter page after Griffin's loss to Anderson Silva. At least Griffin is in the cage fighting against the best. He isn't sitting around reading through straight-to-DVD caliber movie scripts. If Rampage is okay with not getting his belt back, just admit it. Stop coming up with outs.

RUMOR: Antonio Rogerio "Lil Nog" Nogueira vs Dan Henderson could headline UFC 105

The brother of former heavyweight champion Minotauro Nogueira has been proposed a fight that would headline UFC 105 in Manchester, England and place Lil Nog against Dan Henderson in his UFC debut.

The two fighters have met before. The fight was in 2005 and Nogueira scored a submission victory over Dan Henderson.

According to InsideFights.com, "If Henderson agrees to the fight, it indicates that he’s given up on trying to land a shot at Anderson Silva. Henderson feels like he earned a rematch with Silva with his knockout win over Michael Bisping at UFC 100, but Silva claims that Henderson should have to face Nate Marquardt to determine the top contender. Henderson claimed in recent weeks that he would move back to light heavyweight if he wasn’t granted an immediate match with Silva."

There is also a rumored replacement. If Nogueira and Henderson do not agree to take the fight it is widely speculated that welterweight Matt Hughes could face Mike Swick in the main event. Swick had previously pulled out of his match with Martin Kampmann that was scheduled for UFC 103.

The co-main event for this fight card will be Michael Bisping vs Dennis Kang.

Associated Press, No. 9 BYU has jumped 11 spots and No. 4 Alabama has received two first-place votes.

The Cougars pulled the biggest upset of the opening weekend of the college football
season, beating Oklahoma 14-13 on Saturday. Sooners Heisman Trophy winner Sam
Bradford was knocked out of the game with a shoulder injury.

Oklahoma drops 10 spots from No. 3 to No. 13. Florida is still an overwhelming No. 1, receiving 56 of 60 first-place votes Tuesday.
Texas holds steady at No. 2, with two first-place votes.

Alabama moved up one spot after its 34-24 victory against Virginia Tech.

Moving into the rankings are Miami, Cincinnati and Missouri. Oregon,
Florida State and Iowa fall out.

Right away you can see that this will be a season full of trash talk between the two coaches, Rashad Evans and Rampage Jackson, and this could be one of the most talented casts we have ever seen. Five Breakout Stars for the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2009-10

Every season, a team has holes to fill and unproven guys who are expected to step up. These players are an unknown commodity throughout the league, but the faithful fanbase knows their names.

The Pittsburgh Steelers will have some new faces sprinkled throughout their starting lineup after a Super Bowl victory. It is essential for these guys to step up if Pittsburgh has a chance to return to glory.

Last season, guys like LaMarr Woodley and Mewelde Moore really stepped up their games. Both were key members of the Steelers' success.

Woodley made himself known as a terror coming off the left side of the defense across from Defensive Player of the Year James Harrison. Woodley's presence was a big factor in Harrison's monster season.

Moore filled in brilliantly when both Willie Parker and Rashard Mendenhall went down with injuries. He allowed the Steelers to stick with their game plan and continue to run the ball.

Moore's presence also allowed Willie Parker to not rush his return. Upon his return, Parker was fully healthy come the playoffs, and his fresh legs were on display.

So which players could break out for the Steelers this season? If the injury bug hits the team, or they are called upon for whatever circumstance, which players will answer the call?

I've picked five players who could make a big impact for our 2009 version of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

5. Defensive End - Evander Hood

Ziggy Hood was the Steelers' first pick in the 2009 NFL Draft. He has a nonstop motor and is relentless in attacking the ball.

Hood will likely be the replacement for Brett Keisel, who will be a free agent after this season, but expect him to get meaningful reps in this season.

The Steelers were plagued with injuries at the defensive end position last season, and the addition of Hood will surely add much-needed depth to the position.

Hood is in a perfect situation. He won't be expected to start, and that will give him time to digest the Steelers' complicated defense.

At the same time, he will have the ability to rotate in and out of the lineup while staying fresh and contributing solid minutes.

4. Return man - Stefan Logan

The Steelers have long been missing an explosive kick and punt returner for their team. This offseason Stefan Logan has turned into an immediate star. His big-play ability has made him the talk of the town.

Logan was a star in the Canadian Football League at running back and if the preseason was any indication, his transition to the NFL will be seemless.

He brings explisveness that Pittsburgh isn't used to having; everytime he touches the ball you have the feeling he could take it to the house.

3. Wide Receiver - Mike Wallace

Mike Wallace is a flat-out burner. He was a third-round draft pick for the Steelers this season, and he will give Limas Sweed competition for the No. 3 wide receiver position.

Wallace is the fastest receiver on the Steelers roster, and that is welcomed after the departure of Nate Washington. Wallace will bring the ability to spread the field better than any Steeler in recent memory.

Wallace could quickly become a fan favorite if he uses his blazing speed and makes big plays on offense.

2. Cornerback - William Gay

William Gay will be the starter opposite veteran Ike Taylor. Gay has long been a favorite of the coaching staff due to his enthusiasm and his hunger to always get better.

Gay has shown his dedication early in the offseason by going down to Florida to train with Ike Taylor. Taylor's mentoring will be instrumental in Gay's success.

William Gay brings the right attitude to the table. You need to be confident, and his time with Ike Taylor is sure to be a "swagger fest."

Gay is unbelievable in zone coverage, and his ball skills will be greatly appreciated in the secondary. As long as he lives up to his potential, the Steelers could have one of the NFL's best cornerback duos.

1. Inside Linebacker—Lawrence Timmons

Lawrence Timmons has been ready to be a starter since last season. The 2007 first-round pick will finally get his chance.

Timmons did get playing time last season due to his ability to drop into pass coverage.

Timmons isn't just a coverage guy. He also has a natural ability to rush the passer, and he has impeccable tackling technique.

Even though he was given less playing time, Timmons took full advantage of those reps, racking up 65 tackles and five sacks. He was more productive than starter Larry Foote.

His playmaking ability will just add to the star-studded linebacking corps, and his upside is still incredible.

He has an aggressive style that will be welcome and perfectly complement his defensive teammates.

The fans have been waiting for Timmons to get his chance, and the wait is finally over.

LFL - Miami Caliente vs Chicago Bliss Recap

Chicago Tribune - The Chicago Bliss football team kicked off its inaugural Lingerie Football League season Friday night with a 29-19 win over the Miami Caliente at the Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates in a 30-minute game that featured hard hits, blitzes, 40-yard spirals and plenty of touchdowns.

Legendary Chicago Bears coach Mike Ditka, who has an ownership stake in the league, said before the game that he's impressed by the level of competition. "They're not NFL-caliber, but they're not supposed to be," he said.

Players wear slight shoulder pads, lacrosse-style helmets, knee and elbow pads and, in the case of the Bliss, orange shorts and modified sports bras.

Bliss running back Saran Dunmore, 34, said the players felt they had something to prove Friday night. "Some people may have been expecting powder puff football and no tackling. I got hit pretty hard a few times," she said. "I'm so proud of my team. I can't wait to get out there and play again."

Oregon RB LeGarrette Blount punches Boise State Player after loss

The college football season got off to a sour start last night. The Boise State Broncos had dominated the Oregon Ducks in a game that was overshadowed by unsportsmanship after the whistle. Oregon running back LeGarrette Blount was being taunted after the game and he threw a punch to Boise State linebacker, Byron Hout , and knocked him to the ground. This is not only unacceptable, but disgusting and has no place in the game. While initial reaction was laughter, I realized the severity of the issue.

Blount needs to be suspended for at least half of the season, if not kicked off of the Ducks team. If you haven't had a chance to check out the video, here it is (I must admit that Blount packs a really nice stiff right jab):

Brett Favre lays dirty hit, should get suspended

I really have had enough of Brett Favre. He is one of the biggest divas to ever set foot on an NFL field and that guy is convinced the game revolves around him. He was a horrible signing for the Vikings. Whether they publicly admit it or not, he is tearing apart the locker room much like he did in New York. People want to tell you that Favre plays for the love of the game, but that is complete nonsense. People who love the game will put in the time, blood, and sweat with their teammates. Favre does anything in his power to skip out on workouts and he always has an excuse for his poor performance whether it be these "cracked ribs" that didn't show up on the injury report or his partially torn rotator cuff. Whatever it is, I am sick of Favre and his act. The circus that follows him is outrageous. What is even more annoying is that Favre does everything the media wants you to believe that Buffalo Bills wide receiver Terrell Owens doesn, yet Favre gets a free pass by the media. Enough of that rant though.

The purpose of this post was to show you all a video of an illegal block and incredibly dirty play that Favre did last night. He layed a crack back block on Texans safety Eugene Wilson. These kind of hits can lead to career-ending injuries- Old man Favre should know this and it was unnacceptable. He needs to be fined. Watch the video and judge for yourself. Was it dirty? If you say no, you are probably an old Packer fan or new Vikings fan.

Local 7 Iron Worker, and frequent WCF Fighter John Benoit takes yet another tough fight when he takes on American Top Team's Hitalo Machado. Benoit was very impressive in his recent win at WCF 7 over Damien Trites, and he looks to keep the train rolling against Machado. Machado makes his WCF debut, but is no stranger to the local fans. He's a Brazilian jiu-jitsu brown belt, and is also an accomplished striker. This highly anticipated fight is sure to please.

Damien Trites will make his return to WCF after his war with John Benoit when he takes on Noah Weisman. Trites will be a big step up in competition for him, but Weisman is looking to get in there with the very best fighters the WCF can give him. Trites is looking for a rematch with Benoit, and a win here could set that fight up.

Two WCF newcomers are set to face off at WCF 8 when Jonathan Sola takes on Jeremy Ross. Both have fought some of the best 155ers in New England, and win here could propel them into the top 10. Both fighters are well rounded, but their strength is their jiu-jitsu. A slick submission is to be expected in this one.

In what could be the fight of the night, Luis Felix takes on Chris Foster. Felix has great wrestling and heavy hands, and Foster is one of the best boxers in local MMA. Both fighters will look to win by knock out, and no matter who wins, this fight will be action backed from the opening bell.

Chiefs QB Matt Cassell may miss season opener

The Kansas City Chiefs made a big splash this offseason with the acquisition of QB Matt Cassell from the New England Patriots. The Chiefs were hoping that Cassell would give them stability at the quarterback position and give the team the franchise quarterback that they have long been searching for. In his last preseason game, Cassell had to leave after his third play of the game against the Seahawks. Seahawks DT Brandon Mebane hit Cassell from behind and Cassell landed awkwardly holding his leg. He suffered a sprained ankle and a sprained MCL as a result of the tackle. At this point it seems that Cassell is out for 2-4 weeks and will possibly miss the season opener for the Chiefs. Cassell was 3,693 yards 21 TDs and 11 INTs as the replacement for Tom Brady this season. If Cassell is unable to go, look for Tyler Thigpen to start for the Chiefs.

Wanderlei Silva did in fact have plastic surgery

I did a post a while back when the guys over at MMABay reported that Wanderlei Silva had undergone sever facial surgery that resulted in him being unable to take the fight against Michael Bisping at UFC 105 (you can read it here). While a lot of people dismissed the reports saying it was just photoshopped, there was later an explanation given. Apparently Wandy had undergone surgery to remove scar tissue from his face, but those of you who saw UFC 102 had to of noticed what I did when Wandy was in the corner of Demian Maia. I will let the pictures speak for themself (the picture on the left is Wanderlei at UFC 102, picture on the right is Wandy pre-surgery), but it is clear that there was more than a routine scar tissue removal.

Tonight at the Rose Garden in Portland, Oregon will be UFC 102. This is the first time being in Oregon and the organization has brought the city of Portland an amazing match-up. The main event of Randy Couture vs Minotauro Nogueira is one that hardcore fans have been waiting for for many years. These two guys are warriors and legends of the sport; they have helped bring mixed martial arts to where it is today.

The other fights on the card include heavy brawler Thiago Silva and the Techno Viking himself, Keith Jardine. Also on the card is an incredible Middleweight bout between undefeated Demian Maia and Nate Marquardt. The winner of this fight catipults themself to the top of the heap, and may be next in line for a title shot against Anderson "The Spider" Silva. The other two fights rounding out the televised card are Chris Leben vs Jake Rosholt and Brandon Vera vs the always dangerous TUF alum, Krzysztof Soszynski.

Randy Couture(16-9-0) vs. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira(32-4-1)
This is the fight that everyone has been looking for in the past. We finally get it. Both fighters are aging, but the winner of this bout could find himself right back in the mix to become the next heavyweight champion. Both fighters are coming off of losses to the men who fought for the title at UFC 100 (Brock Lesnar and Frank Mir). Nogueira has a long history of taking damage in his fights and then pulling out the submission with a "Rocky-esque" mystique. Couture has the dirty boxing skills to give Nogueira all he can handle. How will the fight play out? I see both fighters slugging it out in the first round and when Nogueira realized he can't take the damage he once could, he will pull guard and work his beautiful jiu-jitsu all the way to victory. Prediction: Nogueira via submission, Round 2

Keith Jardine(14-5-1) vs. Thiago Silva(13-1-0)
This could be a wild fight. Both guys like to brawl and they are very solid on the ground as well. Silva is the better of the two on the ground and if he utilizes that advantage he could very well win the fight. The one thing that Silva has to be careful of is that he doesn't get hypnotized by Jardine's awkward style. If Silva can stay away from keeping the fight on his feet, he could end up pulling this off. I think that Jardine may get too careless and that will give Thiago the opportunity he needs to take the fight where he wants it. Prediction: Thiago Silva via TKO, Round 3

Demian Maia(10-0) vs Nate Marquardt(28-7-2)
This fight is the best, and most important fight on the card. The winner will have their chance at Anderson Silva, most likely, and they could become the new face of the middleweight division. Nate Marquardt wants to keep this fight standing, that is where he has the obvious advantage. If he decides to take it to the mat, it is over. While Marquardt does have impressive ground skills, Maia is just in another league. Maia will try from the beginning to get this fight to the ground. It is no secret that he wants to finish off his opponent before any damage can be done. If Maia struggles to get a take down, look for him to go wild and attempt a flying-armbar or do whatever it takes to pull guard. I have a feeling that no matter how hard Marquardt tries to keep this fight standing, it won't be enough. Maia's relentless pursuit will get him to the ground where the fight will end. Prediction: Maia via submission, Round 2

Chris Leben(18-5-0) vs. Jake Rosholt(5-1-0)
This is one fight that I have to be honest about. I have zero interest in it. Jake Rosholt is an up and coming prospect, but he shouldn't be on a main card yet. He is going to be clearly overmatched in this fight and you will see it from the opening bell. If Rosholt looks for his wrestling, it will be cancelled out by Leben's jiu-jitsu. Leben is the better fighter on the feet as well. I can see Rosholt winning this fight only via split decision, but that won't happen. Prediction: Leben via KO, Round 2

Krzysztof Soszynski(18-8-1) vs. Brandon Vera(10-3-0)
Brandon Vera was once the future of the heavyweight division. After a huge slump, he has cut down to his optimum weight class of 205. Krzysztof is a guy who will go out there and throw bombs all night long, but if the fight hits the mat he will look for the kimura from any angle possible. Vera's kickboxing will be a good answer to Krzysztof's striking and it could lead to a very entertaining opening fight. The loser of this fight could soon be looking for another job. Prediction: Krzysztof via TKO, Round 3

Big Months draw closer for BadBoyMMA

As I said a few weeks ago in this article, the upcoming months include some big fights for the guys of BadBoyMMA, one of Latest Sports Gossip's sponsors. September 16th: Roger 'El Matador' Huerta vs. Gray 'The Bully' Maynard
The co-main even on UFC Fight Night 19 is airing on September 16th as a lead-in to the highly anticipated The Ultimate Fighter 10. Roger Huerta (Check out his walk-out shirt here) is fighting in his last match on his UFC contract against Gray Maynard, a fighter regarded as the next big thing in the lightweight division. With hopes of returning to the octagon at some point in the future, you can be sure Huerta will want to end his contract with a high note.

September 19th: Junior 'Cigano' dos Santos vs. Mirko 'Cro Cop' Filipovic at UFC 103
At the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas, three days after UFC Fight Night 19, up and coming fighter, Junior 'Cigano" dos Santos, will face off against MMA veteran, Mirko 'Cro Cop' Filipovic. This fight is sure to be a very exciting bout. In one corner you have dos Santos, a world kick boxing champion, and in the other corner stands Cro Cop, the man with the most (T)KOs with his legs than anyone. Someone is going to be seeing stars by the end of this fight.

October 24th: Champion Lyoto 'The Dragon' Machida vs. Mauricio 'Shogun' Rua at UFC 104
The Battle of the Two Bad Boys is at this UFC event, as the reigning Light Heavyweight Champion Lyoto Machida goes up against Mauricio Rua. The undefeated Machida will be trying to do what the last two champions haven't been able to do, successfully defend his belt. Even though Lyoto is the most evasive fighter in UFC history, this won't be an easy fight. Shogun, the former Pride Middleweight Grand Prix Tournament Champion, will be looking to do the same thing to Machida that he did in his last fight, destroy him.

Dallas Cowboys won't be forced to move video board

When Jerry Jones built his new $1.5 billion stadium for the Dallas Cowboys, he never could have imagined that the super-sized screen hanging 90-feet above the field could cause such a stir, but in the teams first home preseason game the video board stole headlines.

Tennessee Titans punter AJ Trapasso had hit the board that hangs from 20 yard line to 20 yard line consistently during warm-ups and even once during the game. The NFL Competition Committee had begun reviewing the issue. I'm not too sure why this was ever a big deal. The screen is at 90 feet while the league mandate is 85 feet. The ball only hit the video board once in a regulation game; is it really worth spending multiple millions to adjust the height by a few feet?

The league handed down a ruling, for now, on the issue. It seems as if the Cowboys will not be forced to move the board. Instead, if the ball strikes the video board during a game, the clock will be reset and the play will be a do over. This is only the ruling for the time being and it will effect the rest of this preseason, regular season, and postseason. The issue may very well be revisited after the year is over.

ProFootballTalk.com has also reported that whether or not a ball hits the video board will be reviewable. "

"If the officials on the field don't notice the ball striking the video board, the replay assistant will be empowered to trigger a replay review -- even if the incident occurs outside the final two minutes of each half, the normal time period during which the replay assistant has the power to call upon the referee to assume the position at the portable replay booth. And if the replay official doesn't believe the ball struck the video board but the head coach of either team thinks otherwise, a red-flag challenge will be available."

Leave it to the Dallas Cowboys to strike controversy over the smallest, or in this case biggest, things.

Michael Vick Will Make Philly Interesting

Last night was the long awaited return of Michael Vick to the NFL with the Philadelphia Eagles. Vick first saw action on the second play of the game. Vick had a less than spectacular showing in his return going 4-4 passing for 15 yards, while only tallying one yard on the ground. Not much should have been expected from Vick after the two year layoff, but it is the response from the fans and starting quarterback Donovan McNabb that makes the biggest story.

When Vick first entered the game he received a shocking response. No boos. No negative energy. He instead received a standing ovation from the Philadelphia fans. There was even a time in the game where the crowd began to chant, "We want Vick!"

It is so clear that the city is happy to have him. There is excitement about the team and the endless possibilities of where he could get playing time keeps the wheels in our heads spinning. Vick will bring excitement and he brings even more explosive power to the Eagles offense.

The worst response Vick got all day was from Donovan McNabb following the game. I have said all along that this story of McNabb being the one to recruit Vick is a sham, it didn't happen and McNabb is not happy to see Vick in town. After the game, McNabb said time and time again that Vick disrupted the Eagles rhythm:

"I know what we were trying to do [with Vick] and we were able to get that done. I thought it was time for us to kind of get our offense going. I think that's very important in a game, whether it's in the regular season or the preseason, to get that rhythm going. If you're going to show different looks, make sure it's the right time. That's what the preseason's for to make sure you know when that time is and we'll get that time together. I thought it was important at that time to get out and run our offense."

McNabb was asked about how it was getting in rhythm with Vick in the offense and he said, "It was tough. I think in any situation, honestly, when you're trying something new, it's important that you get into a rhythm first and then try to work it in there in the offense. Offensively, we just can't get that going consistently and I thought we did some great things that presented pressure to the defense but at some point you have to get into a rhythm and get things going down the field and move the chains."

This will be a fun story to follow throughout the season. It was only months ago that head coach Andy Reid tried to bench McNabb in favor of Kevin Kolb. Who's to say the team and the city will not turn on McNabb after a few poor games when they know they have Michael Vick on the sideline.

If the game told us anything, it is that Eagles fans are excited and they love having Michael Vick. Stay tuned to the Philadelphia Eagles this season. You won't want to miss these fireworks.

Brandon Marshall Makes A Mockery Of Practice

Disgruntled Broncos WR Brandon Marshall has made it clear that he wants to be shipped out of town, but the way he is going about making his case has created quite a stir. Marshall can be seen in this following video walking through drills at Broncos practice. He is obviously disinterested in what is going on and he is hurting the team by being there.

I'm not sure if Marshall is aware that he can be suspended for conduct detrimental to the team, but he needs to clean his act up. He is becoming everything the media wants you to believe that Terrell Owens is. If I were Josh McDaniels, I'd bite the bullet [again] and let Marshall be someone elses headache.

MTV's Bully Beatdown - FAKE

When watching MTV's Bully Beatdown you have to think to yourself, is this real? The level of douchebaggery that is littered throughout the show is overwhelming. Whether it be from the host, Jason "Mayhem" Miller, to the so called "bullies," the show is so obviously scripted. What else should we expect from an MTV "reality" show though.

While scanning through articles online I came acrossed a very interesting one by a man who calls himself Bruno on MMATKO.com The article has some interesting facts about the cast members of the show. One comment that stood out immediately is when he said, "I spoke with a friend that helped with the production of the show and was told that most of the bully/victim combo had never even met prior to the taping of each episode."

That's a pretty interesting tidbit of information. These "bullies" are supposed to make the "victims" lifes a living hell leading up to the big fight, but it's clearly not the case. Bruno goes into more detail:

"Take bully Jon from the last episode with Jake Shields. Last year he was on the Fox TV show Battle of the Bods where Jonathan proclaimed to be a professional stuntman as he judged the bodies of young women.

Even though Bully Beatdown is filled with actors the fights are mostly real. The stuntmen do try to fight back against the Pro MMA fighters but their payday comes not from the 10,000 prize money offered up but from the money guaranteed on the contract they signed going into the fight."

There is also another "bully" who happens to be listed on IMDB. His background included, "Performance Skills: Martial Arts, Stunts." He was even on My name is Earl.

In the end, it really doesn't matter how fake or scripted the events leading up the the final fight are. All that matters is how we love to tune in to see a guy get his ass beat, unfortunately that is not Mayhem Miller. If you want to see Mayhem get beat down, he is rumored to be fighting Jake Shields for the Strikeforce Interim Middleweight Title in early November.

Fedor will make Strikeforce debut vs Brett Rogers

The Tennessee Titans Cheerleaders Calendar Release Party will be held Wednesday, August 26th, at Cabana (1910 Belcourt Ave.) in Nashville’s Hillsboro Village.
The evening of entertainment will include a meet and greet with the entire Titans Cheerleading squad, a fashion show with cheerleaders modeling the suits seen in the 2010 calendar and an autograph session.

The Titans Cheerleaders shot the 2010 calendar in May on the beaches of the Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort in Destin, Fla. The calendar was shot and designed by renowned Nashville photographer, Erick Anderson, who has designed for Grammy-winning recording artists and is known for his unique work and impeccable attention to detail.

“We are very proud of this year’s swimsuit calendar,” said Titans Director of Cheerleaders Stacie Kinder. “I think it is our best yet, and the ladies are looking forward to an amazing debut at the release party.”

Noguiera prepared to stand with Couture at UFC 102

The upcoming UFC pay-per view this Saturday, August the 29th, will put two legends of the octagon against each other for the first time. In the main even of UFC 102, brazilian jiu-jitsu ace Antonio Rodrigo Minotauro Noguiera (31-5-1) will face off against mixed martial arts pioneer, Randy "The Natural" Couture (16-9).

Both Couture and Noguiera are coming off of TKO losses to Brock Lesnar and Frank Mir respectively. Couture lost to Lesnar at UFC 91 for the heavyweight title and Noguiera lost to Mir at UFC 92: Ultimate 2008 for the interim belt.

Noguiera is one of the best heavyweights in the world when it comes to his submission game, but one thing that caught my eye while I was reading ahead for this Saturday's event was a quote by Big Nog's muay thai coach, Luiz Alves.

Alves said that Noguiera is prepared to keep the fight on his feet and strike with Couture. Not only that, but Alves stated that Couture doesn't have knockout power. "We think that Couture will fight standing against him, and Rodrigo thinks that too. Rodrigo is 100% prepared standing. I always said that this fight were good to Rodrigo, because Couture has no punch to knock him out, and Rodrigo boxes better than him. Rodrigo is prepared in the ground too and will work to submit, because Rodrigo has everything to submit him. Our strategy is stay away from the fence,” said Alves.

If the fight does go to the ground, Noguiera has the clear advantage in the submission game. He is also working very hard on his wrestling. "There are a lot of great guys from wrestling helping us too, and a coach from the US National team”, Alves said.

Noguiera is finishing off his training this week in California with the likes of pound-for-pound king Anderson Silva and top heavyweight prospect and BadBoyMMA fighter Junior Dos Santos.

Whichever fighter wins this bout will put themselves back in the talk for an upcoming title shot. At the very least this will be an entertaining fight and a chance for people to watch and enjoy to of the sports best do battle.

It is widely known to fans all across baseball that all-time hit king Pete Rose is banned from baseball. The ban was initially put into place back in 1989, and it has kept one of the sports best out of the Hall of Fame. In Pete Rose is best known for his time with the St. Louis Cardinals as a manager and player. He holds the MLB record for hits(4,256), at bats(14,053), and games played (3,562). I just wanted to look back and share one of the first articles written about the ban back in 1989 from the New York Times.

Rose Is Out, but He Says Wait Till Next Year

Saying he believed that Pete Rose had bet on baseball games, including those of the team he managed, Commissioner A. Bartlett Giamatti announced an agreement yesterday that bans Mr. Rose permanently from baseball.

The five-page agreement, reached after four months of sporadic negotiations, encompasses virtually everything the commissioner wanted to achieve, including reaffirmation of the authority of his office, and grants Mr. Rose only the ability to continue denying that he bet on baseball games.

The carefully worded legal document stipulates that Mr. Rose can apply for reinstatement after a year under Major League Rule 15 (c). The rule, which applies to anyone ruled ineligible, states that ''no application for reinstatement from the ineligible list may be made until after the lapse of one year. . . .''

The agreement, signed by Mr. Rose and Mr. Giamatti, does not specify that the Cincinnati Reds' manager was suspended for betting on baseball games and does not say that he bet on games. It says, in fact, that ''nothing in this agreement shall be deemed either an admission or a denial'' by Mr. Rose of the charges that he bet on games.

Nevertheless, at a news conference announcing Mr. Rose's ''banishment for life,'' Mr. Giamatti, in reply to a question, said, ''In the absence of a hearing and therefore in the absence of any evidence to the contrary, I am confronted by the factual record of the Dowd report, and on the basis of that, yes, I have concluded that he bet on baseball.'' And on the Reds? ''Yes.''

Mr. Rose, at his own news conference at Riverfront Stadium in Cincinnati, said, ''Regardless of what the commissioner said today, I did not bet on baseball.''

The Dowd report, a 225-page document supported by seven volumes of exhibits compiled by John M. Dowd, the special counsel hired by the commissioner, contained voluminous testimony chronicling Mr. Rose's gambling activities.

At one point in the negotiations with Mr. Rose's attorneys, Francis T. Vincent Jr., the deputy commissioner, proposed that Mr. Rose be made to wait for seven years before applying for reinstatement, according to a lawyer familiar with the talks. Mr. Vincent, the lawyer said, eventually lowered the period to five years and then to three years before the two sides agreed on using Rule 15 (c).

Both Mr. Giamatti and Reuven Katz, Mr. Rose's lawyer, said they had made no deal about reinstatement. It is not automatic, the commissioner said; nor is it guaranteed.

''The burden to show a redirected, reconfigured, rehabilitated life is entirely Pete Rose's,'' Mr. Giamatti said at the news conference at the New York Hilton. No 'Team Sports' Betting

Mr. Rose said yesterday that he would ''never bet on any kind of sports again - team sports.''

Mr. Rose, whose 4,256 hits are the most any player has ever had, is easily the most prominent person to be banned from baseball since 1921 when Shoeless Joe Jackson and seven other members of the Chicago White Sox were banished by the first commissioner, Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis, for conspiring to fix the 1919 World Series.

Mr. Rose said he would apply for reinstatement as soon as he is permitted to do so. An ineligible person may apply as often as he wants, but of the 14 who have been banned, none have been reinstated.

Mr. Rose is eligible for election to the Hall of Fame in 1992. Asked about Mr. Rose's chances at the news conference today, Mr. Giamatti said: ''It is the baseball writers' responsibility to decide who goes into the Hall of Fame. It is not mine. I have never as league president and commissioner and will never express an opinion about the eligibility, viability or appropriateness of any candidate for the Hall of Fame.'' Settlement Sought

Mr. Rose had for two months blocked Mr. Giamatti's efforts to hear the baseball-betting charges against him by filing a lawsuit against the commissioner. At the same time, however, his lawyers were seeking a settlement because, Mr. Katz said, the commissioner could have declared Mr. Rose permanently ineligible for violating another section of the same rule that includes the betting prohibition.

Rule 21 (d) calls for a lifetime suspension for anyone found betting on his team's games. Rule 21 (f) says that a person engaging in acts, practices or conduct not ''in the best interests of baseball'' can be rendered permanently ineligible.

''If Pete had got through a Federal court hearing or even a hearing before Giamatti and been found not to have bet on baseball,'' Mr. Katz said, ''the commissioner still could have suspended him for 21 (f). Pete admitted certain things under oath and the commissioner has complete discretion to act.''

Mr. Rose, in a deposition last April, admitted that he bet on sports other than baseball with bookmakers. Mr. Giamatti said that the deposition contains ''admitted violations, consorting with gamblers and other matters.''

At the same time, the existence of 21 (f) was critical for Mr. Rose in reaching an agreement. His primary goal was to avoid being labeled as one who had bet on baseball games.

''If there hadn't been an 'f,' we wouldn't have agreed to anything,'' Mr. Katz said. ''If permanent ineligibility had applied only to betting, I wouldn't have agreed to permanent ineligibility. But 'f' calls for it, too.'' Movement Last Week

In any agreement, the commissioner insisted on permanent ineligibility for Mr. Rose. Mr. Katz resisted that effort at first, and it was not until late last week that the two sides began coming around to an agreement.

Lawyers on both sides said everyone wanted an agreement that would end the six-month-old case. Mr. Rose's lawyers made the first move late in April, and three lawyers from each camp, including Mr. Katz and Mr. Vincent, met in Dayton, Ohio, April 29.

Mr. Vincent said that Mr. Katz made some proposals ''which I rejected as being unrealistic in light of the circumstances as I then knew them.'' Under the proposals, the deputy commissioner said, Mr. Rose would incur some unspecified penalty for misbehavior, do public service and make some charitable contribution.

Talks broke off, and neither side pursued additional talks until July. Then they had two meetings in New York. On July 16, Louis Hoynes, the commissioner's chief trial lawyer; John Elam, his Columbus lawyer, and Mr. Vincent met at Mr. Hoynes's office with Mr. Katz and Robert Stachler, Mr. Rose's trial attorney. Eleven days later, Mr. Vincent and Mr. Katz met at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel. Little Court Progress

Throughout the month of July, the lawyers also kept busy in court, filing a series of motions and petitions and even arguing at a hearing before Judge John Holschuh of United States District Court in Columbus. But they were making almost as little progress in court as they were in negotiations.

As the two sides argued in court over jurisdiction of Mr. Rose's lawsuit, the talks stalled again, this time over three issues: permanent ineligibility, reinstatement and Mr. Rose's denial of betting on games.

''We would not accept a document in which Pete Rose denied he bet on baseball,'' Mr. Vincent said.

Mr. Katz, on the other hand, said he would not accept an agreement in which Mr. Rose could not deny such wagering. ''They wanted Pete to say 'I neither admit nor deny that I bet on baseball,' '' Mr. Katz related.

While the trial lawyers continued filing court papers, Mr. Katz went to Ireland for a weeklong golfing trip. Last Thursday, five days after he returned, Mr. Katz called Mr. Vincent.

''If they agreed that there would be no finding that Pete bet on baseball,'' Mr. Katz said, ''we could live with permanent ineligibility under 21 (f).'' A series of calls ensued after Mr. Katz's call last Thursday, leading to the final agreement, which was reached at 3:40 P.M. Wednesday. Commissioner Makes a Call

The final step was a telephone call from Mr. Giamatti, in New York, to Mr. Katz, in Cincinnati. Mr. Katz had told Mr. Vincent he wanted assurance that Mr. Giamatti would have an open mind on reinstatement.

''That was the occasion of my call,'' the commissioner said. ''It was the only conversation I had with Mr. Katz in the six-month process.''

In the agreement, Mr. Rose ''agrees and submits to the sole and exclusive jurisdiction of the commissioner.'' Furthermore, he acknowledges ''that the commissioner has a factual basis to impose the penalty provided'' and ''agrees not to challenge that penalty in court.''

The penalty is levied under Rule 21, but no lettered paragraph, (d) or (f), is specified. Finally, Mr. Rose agrees not to challenge the commissioner's decision on his application for reinstatement.

At his news conference, Mr. Giamatti called Mr. Rose ''one of the greatest players this game has ever seen.'' In a statement he read before he answered questions, Mr. Giamatti said, ''The banishment for life of Pete Rose from baseball is the sad end of a sorry episode.''

Report: BJ Penn vs Diego Sanchez to headline UFC 105

The UFC 105 card was looking shaky after Wanderlei Silva had to pull from the main event with facial surgery. Sources are now saying that the UFC 105 card which is expected to be broadcast free on Spike TV will be headlined with a lightweight title fight between BJ Penn and Diego Sanchez.

Michael Bisping was initially slated to headline in his home country of England, but he will now face Denis Kang.
Penn vs Sanchez is an amazing headline bout for a free card and with Sanchez being the original "Ultimate Fighter" winner, the even could pull a few million viewers.

When Frank Mir owned the UFC interim heavyweight title, he always made clear
that he didn't believe his own belt made him the best heavyweight in the
world: Mir, like most MMA observers, said that Fedor Emelianenko is the top
heavyweight. But now Mir's opinion has changed.

Asked on the DAM Show why he thought Fedor had chosen to fight for Strikeforce instead of the UFC, Mir echoed UFC President Dana White and others who have suggested that Fedor isn't interested in proving himself against UFC champion Brock Lesnar and the other top fighters in the UFC.

"I think it's an excuse to dodge the top-level competition," Mir said. "As long as he never proves it, he can keep the No. 1 ranking. If he goes into the cage and loses, he loses that. If he stays out of the cage and doesn't fight myself, Lesnar, Cain
Velasquez, Shane Carwin and some of the top heavyweights, he can always have
an argument."

Mir also seemed to suggest that Fedor -- who has fought his entire
career in rings -- would struggle inside a cage. Asked if Fedor would beat
Lesnar, Mir answered, "In a cage? No. In a boxing ring? Possibly."

We'll find out if Fedor can fight in a cage whenever he fights for Strikeforce. But
Mir is right that we won't find out if Fedor can beat the best opposition in the
world

The Minnesota Timberwolves are still trying to swing a deal to complete the $6.6 million buyout for Spanish sensation, Rick Rubio.

According to TwinCities.com. "Timberwolves President David Kahn has made a second trip to Spain to try to learn more about what it will take to get Ricky Rubio, the team's No. 1 draft pick, to Minnesota.
It's still unclear whether the 18-year-old point guard could get out of his DKV Joventut Barcelona team's contract, which includes a $6.6 million buyout, in time for Wolves training camp in October.
But the Wolves, as the Vikings did this week with quarterback Brett Favre, would allow Rubio to come to training camp late. That's because Rubio has started practicing with the Spanish national team and would be in shape.
It's expected to be several more weeks before the Wolves learn whether they will have Rubio for the coming season. But Rubio has indicated to Kahn that he's willing to come to Minnesota if the buyout issue can be resolved.
Right now, the issue is money.
On his most recent trip to Barcelona, Kahn met with DKV Joventut management and set up a communication line between Rubio and new Wolves coach Kurt Rambis.
NBA rules prohibit Kahn from negotiating Rubio's buyout; that has to be done by Rubio and his agent. But Kahn reassured Rubio that the Wolves would prefer he join them this season.
However, several European teams are now interested in acquiring Rubio, and they would want to secure him for two seasons. Kahn has been trying to learn what those teams have been willing to pay for Rubio's rights."

Rubio was the youngest player to ever play professional basketball in the Spanish league and he was the first player ever drafted born in the 1990's. A lot of hype surrounds Rubio who has some of the craziest and most impressive highlights you will see. He isn't the most athletic guy, but his feel for the game is great and he has some of the best vision in basketball.

He has always said that his dream was to play in the NBA, we will just have to see if that dream included Minnesota.

UFC 103: Franklin vs Belfort Preliminary Card Free on Spike

Reports are indicating that the preliminary card of UFC 103: Franklin vs Belfort in Dallas, Texas will be aired live, commercial free on Spike TV.

According to the Orange County Register, " The "UFC 103: Franklin vs. Belfort" pay-per-view card is going toe-to-toe with the Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Juan Manuel Marquez HBO pay-per-view event on September 19th. The UFC is known for its creative marketing and counter-programming tactics and it looks like the MMA giant has come up with a good plan to beef up awareness for UFC 103. The UFC will air a two-hour telecast of the UFC 103 undercard commercial free on Spike TV as a lead in for the UFC 103 main card on pay-per-view, according to a source at the UFC."

The preliminary card for UFC 103 includes the following bouts:

Plaxico Burress to serve 2 years in jail

Former New York Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress has been informed
that he will be sentenced to two-years in prison. Burress was hoping
to be able to play in the 2009-2010 season, but with news of his jail
sentence it is likely he won't be receiving any calls. Even before
this news, multiple sources were reporting that Burress would face a
one-year suspension by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.

The sentence stems from an incident at the end of last season where
Burress accidently shot himself in the leg in a New York night club.

Burress has to be regretting his choice from earlier in the year. He
was offered a deal that would only require two or three months in
prison; he turned it down hoping for no jail time.

In the end, whether you think it's fair or not, Burress will be
punished to the full extent of the law and it will likely be the end
of his career as a professional football player.

Brock Lesnar vs Shane Carwin at UFC 106

Rumors are running rampant that UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar
will make his first title defense against Shane Carwin at UFC 106.

Carwin was previously scheduled to face heavyweigh sensation Cain
Velasquez as the co-main event at UFC 104: Machida vs Shogun. The bout
was supposed to determine the number one contender, according to Dana
White.

It is important to not that this is only a rumor and the camp of Cain
Velasquez has not been made aware of any change in schedule. As of
this post, they were not told that the Velasquez vs Carwin fight would
be scrapped.

If Lesnar vs Carwin was to be made official and headline UFC 106, it
would join Tito Ortiz vs Mark Coleman and the rumored bout between Jon

Nick Diaz looks to fight in DREAM in Oct., Meets with CSAC

While his re-licensure in California remains a work in progress, Nick Diaz
is in talks to fight for Dream in October.

Cesar Gracie, Diaz’s longtime
trainer and manager, met with Dream Event Producer Keiichi Sasahara at
Strikeforce this past weekend in San Jose, Calif., to discuss the possibility of
Diaz competing either Oct. 6 or 22. Gracie said Sasahara expressed an interest
in the outspoken 28-year-old facing Japanese legend Hayato Sakurai, but that
talks were in the preliminary stages.

Gracie said he hopes Diaz will be
granted an exemption for marijuana while out of competition, and that the
fighter will abide by the testing procedures during competition.

“He does need (marijuana),” said Gracie. “He has ADHD and he’s had a prescription
for Ritalin since he was a kid. He doesn’t want to take that. That’s worse than
pot.”

Douglas called the meeting “extremely positive.”

“We don’t have a TUE program in California yet, not to say we won’t,” Douglas told
Sherdog.com Monday. “I pledged to have the CSAC staff work with Gracie and his
reps, because putting a TUE program together to present to the commission will
take time and effort, as well as feedback from many parties. We can put the plan
together, but ultimately the commission has to vote for it.”

Brett Favre to sign with the Minnesota Vikings today

The Brett Favre saga is not yet over. Brett Favre is expected to sign with the Minnesota Vikings by the end of the day. It is widely being reported that as we speak, the quarterback is on route to Minnesota and he could be at practice as soon as this afternoon if he passes his physical. The deal is worth a reported $10-$12 million dollars.

According to Vikings coach Brad Childress, Brett Favre is on his way to meet with the team.

From ProFootballTalk.com, 'ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports that it actually will be a two-year deal, but that as a practical matter it will operate as a one-year arrangement. Mort also reports that the contract has been in place for two months."

Favre is losing a lot of respect and hurting his legacy around the league. The guy who once played for the game is now playing for revenge and money. If Favre truly loved the game, there would be no question and he would immediately have committed to playing with Minnesota. He would have been there from day one at training camp instead of holding yet another team hostage.

Of course, with Favre we never know if this is truly the end. I was personally hoping that we had heard the last from Brett Favre, unfortunately his ego is too big and he could not handle Mike Vick being in the headlines.

The Vikings quarterbacks and team chemistry have been ruined by this whole story. I just can't wait to follow and see what happens next. I won't be able to keep my eyes off of this trainwreck.

But that is it for now... Brett Favre will be a Viking by the end of the day... for now...

Chuck Liddell and Michael Irvin to be on Dancing With the Stars

Earlier today it was announced that two Hall of Famers would be joining the cast of the latest season of Dancing With The Stars. Now I don't generally care about this show, but since thesare two of the greatest athletes to ever play their sport I figured it was worth the mention. Michael Irvin is a former member of America's Team, the Dallas Cowboys.

Irvin is a five-time pro bowler and a three-time Super Bowl Champion. Irvin has really been making his rounds through reality television. His show 4th and Long recently came to a conclusion on Spike TV. The winner of Irvin's show was rewarded a roster spot on the Dallas Cowboys training camp roster. Wide receivers are known for their light feet and being graceful, could Irvin be an early favorite to take the Dancing With The Stars title and add more hardware to his trophy case? You will have to tune in to see.

Chuck Liddell is one of the biggest stars in the history of mixed martial arts. He is a former heavyweight champion and he was just recently inducted to the UFC Hall of Fame. His addition to the cast should help improve the rapidly growing popularity of MMA. This is a very calculated move I am sure by Dana White who announced a few weeks ago the broadcasting deal with ESPN in the United Kingdom. ABC, which airs Dancing With The Stars, is ESPN's sister network. There has long been speculation that ABC was negotiating a deal with the UFC that would bring the organization to national television. Could this help the deal along? This is pure speculation on my point.

When all is said and done, it should be fun to watch these two guys battle it out on the dance floor (sounds crazy doesn't it?). We all love seeing great athletes being humbled and these are two men who should be able to have a good laugh at themselves. As the Schwab would say on ESPN, "I give this show 5 bags of chips."

For those of you who don't know, the LFL is the Lingerie Football League. Yes, it is as awesome as it sounds. Female athletes across the country suit up to play tackle football in lingerie. But, don't let the good looks and minimal clothing fool you. These girls train hard and are world-class athletes.

This fall will mark the inaugural season of the LFL in which the teams will play throughout a twenty week season. The LFL is going to be must watch. I am telling you all, you will be surprised with the determination and skill of these athletes. These women will blow American away.

I had the pleasure of catching up with the Defensive Captain and starting linebacker for the Miami Caliente squad, Taira Turley. She took the time out to answer a few questions, and here is what she had to say:

LSG: How did you find out about the tryouts for the LFL? Did you have any hesitation to go put your skills to the test?

Taira Turley: I found out about the LFL tryouts from my best friend Laura Valldeperas who was on the team last year. Honestly, no I didn’t hesitate at all to go put my skills to the test. I’ve always been an athlete and it seemed like a great opportunity.

LSG: What was the level of competition like? What types of athletes showed up?
Taira: The level of competition was high. There were a lot of women out there with talent and speed. At first I was nervous it definitely made it easier knowing someone on the team. Laura and I would practice before tryouts, so I had an idea of what to expect.

LSG: Tell me a little about your team, the Miami Caliente.

Taira: The Miami Caliente have great talent on offense and defense. We have women on the team that have played sports all their lives and were just looking for this great opportunity to continue playing sports. In the beginning, defense was a little shaky it was a process figuring out which girl belonged at which position. I can say now that we are in place and ready to knock em dead. Offense has always been spectacular they have incredible plays that are going to kill our opponents defense.

LSG: How’d you get to be the designated defensive captain?

Taira: Wow, it was definitely a shock. Our defense coach Pat appointed me captain. I guess he saw leadership qualities in me. Every practice I just go out on the field and play hard. No excuses I play at practice the way I would play in a game.

LSG: What are the goals you have for the season?

Taira: My goal for the season is to get as many sacks as I can. I want to be the next John Abraham, one of the best defensive players I know in the NFL that plays for the Atlanta Falcons.

LSG: The team opens up the season on September 4th against the Chicago Bliss. What’s the buzz surrounding your team right now? Are you ready to get playing already?

Taira: Well the buzz surrounding our team right now is that we are not expected to win. We are the underdogs and hey that’s fine because come September 4th we are going to prove to the league and our opponents that we are going to finish on top. We're coming strong and we are ready to play. We've been preparing for the season opener for a very long time and we cant wait to just get out there and show everyone why we're called Caliente (HOT)

LSG: What is the intensity like during workouts and practice?

Taira: The intensity at practice is high. Our coaches are tough on us, sometimes I think they forget we're ladies [laugh]. Coach Pat yells a lot but I love it. It makes me work even harder. By the way his sprint workouts are no joke, I think a few of us come close to either throwing up or passing out every time. That’s when you know we were pushed to the limit.

LSG: Do you worry some people may not take the level of athleticism seriously? What do you have to say to those naysayers?

Taira: The people that don't take the level of athleticism seriously should reconsider their thoughts. The LFL girls are going to prove everyone wrong and show them that we can play football too. Who said that a girl has to be a cheerleader. We are determined to be just as good at this sport as the guys.

LSG: Do you think they could make it through one of your workouts?

Taira: The naysayers definitely could not make it through one of our workouts. We go hard each and every time. We don’t have time for babies on our team anyone that cant take the heat shouldn't come out on the field.

LSG: Can you tell us some of the rule differences between leagues such as the NFL and your own?

Taira: Some of the rule differences between leagues such as the NFL and our own firstly are that in our league it's 7 on 7. Touchdowns are worth 6 points but instead of kicking a field goal we score extra points from the 2 or 5 yard line. Our games are only two 15 minute halfs; hopefully that changes in the future. Lastly we play in lingerie that's always a plus. Our equipment includes a helmet, shoulder pads, knee pads, elbow pads, and cleats.

LSG: Now tell us a little about yourself. You’ve clearly been an athlete all your life, what activities were you into growing up?

Taira: Yes, this is true I've always been an athlete. It all began with street races during recess. I grew up with an older brother, so I guess you can say I was a tomboy growing up. I always wanted to do everything he did. He was my role model. He played baseball, so I played softball. He ran track and field, so I ran track and field. Little did I know track would be my favorite and the sport I was most recognized for. I ran track for thirteen years competing in states championships, junior olympics, and nationals. In the fall, I would play soccer to stay in shape for the next three seasons of track winter, spring, and summer.
LSG: Did you always want to be an athlete?

Taira: Yes I've always wanted to be an athlete. I love sports and I figure if you're good at them why not show off your talent.
LSG: What sports are you into now? Any favorite teams or athletes?

Taira: As of now football is my favorite sport to watch. I only like basketball during playoffs. Some of my favorite athletes and friends include Wayne Gandy of the Atlanta Falcons, Jamal Lewis of the Cleveland Browns, and John Abraham of the Atlanta Falcons. Jamal’s brother John Lewis is my trainer in Atlanta and I definitely would like to thank him for getting me into the best shape. I'd like to thank Wayne Gandy also for all the great defense tips

LSG: What are you like when you aren’t on the field being competitive? What sort of hobbies do you have?

Taira: When I'm not on the field competing I'm a full-time Makeup Artist. I love painting faces. Other than that I'm in the gym 7 days a week trying to get more strong and fit.

LSG: To close this off, why don’t tell the readers something you want them to know.

Taira: To close off my interview I would like to let everyone know that I’m not always rough and tough, I have a soft spot too. I come from a mixed background of African American and Puerto Rican. My favorite movie is dumb and dumber and reality TV shows amuse me. I get a kick out of watching people make fools out of themselves, it’s hilarious.

I can remember the first time I watched many of the movies that I consider my favorites. I stood under the sun for hours for Return of the Jedi as an 8-year-old in a line that stretched around the block.

The smell of cloves and cinnamon are still fresh in my memory from sipping chai in Zanzibar as I watched Malcolm X for the first time halfway around the world.

And while tonight's location and surroundings were much more mundane (alone in my living room sprawled out on my favorite chair) I hope that the emotion and power of Ernie Davis' story sticks with me for the rest of my days.

Perhaps I'm a sucker for the melodramatic. In fact, I know I am. I think I've shed tears each and every time Sean Astin scrambles across the screen and tackles the quarterback at the end of Rudy.

Every time. I tear up when the underdog overcomes the adversity and wins, and when success is found by those deserving.

Something tells me that most people that watch this movie will be touched, inspired and humbled by this movie just as I was.

Because this is not just a story about a kid overcoming great odds to succeed. It's not just a story about racial tensions and how justice prevails. And it's certainly not a story about the happily ever after.

Ernie Davis' story is one that was not well-known to me before this movie came onto the scene. As a lifelong sports fan, it was certainly a name I knew, and I probably could've correctly answered a Trivial Pursuit question about who the first African-American Heisman Trophy winner.

But very clearly, I could not have spoken to the power and the importance he played in the integration of sports, and of our country.

His accomplishments were so great and profound that JFK requested to meet Davis while in New York to receive the Heisman. And when he was honored with his own town holiday, President Kennedy sent the following note for the celebration:

"Seldom has an athlete been more deserving of such a tribute. Your high standards of performance on the field and off the field, reflect the finest qualities of competition, sportsmanship and citizenship.

"The nation has bestowed upon you its highest awards for your athletic achievements. It's a privilege for me to address you tonight as an outstanding American, and as a worthy example of our youth. I salute you."

We all know the stories of Jessie Owens, Jackie Robinson, Hank Aaron, Jim Brown, Muhammad Ali, and Arthur Ashe, and the great barriers that each rose and conquered, not only for their own sport or themselves, but for the greater good for us all. Well, please add Ernie Davis to that list.

This movie was anchored by three solid actors: Rob Brown from Finding Forrester fame, and Charles S. Dutton and Dennis Quaid, neither of whom need any introduction. No one received any Oscar nods for their portrayals, but everyone in the movie gave fine performances. It was a team effort, and a stellar one at that.

I suppose, for me, one of the great marks of a stellar movie is the desire to go right back to the beginning and watch it all over again. I hope you'll excuse me, because the opening credits are rolling...

RUMOR: Wanderlei Silva had plastic surgery?

Umm... I don't know where to start. So apparently the picture on the right is confirmed to be Wanderlei Silva. He has allegedly undergone facial surgery; common sense would tell you that from comparing the two pictures. Anyways... it isn't known whether his face is still healing or if he completely changed his look. I am honestly creeped out by this whole situation. It is strictly a rumor. Not sure where it started, but anyways here is a report from MMAbay.com:

MMABay can EXCLUSIVELY reveal that former PRIDE FC middleweight champion, Wanderlei “The Axe Murderer” Silva has undergone extensive facial surgery in Brazil ruling him out of his proposed fight with Michael Bisping in the UK.

After seeing pictures posted on a popular internet forum of the star, MMABay contacted a source in Las Vegas that shed light on the situation. Surgery of this type normally takes 3-4 weeks to recover from but due to circumstances beyond control, the Brazilian will have to sit out the rest of the year.

Wanderlei was all set to square off with UK star, Michael Bisping at UFC 105 on November 14th in Manchester, England but when MMABay contacted management at the Widnes based gym tonight we were told “The Count” had no opponent at this time, backing up what our source had told us in Brazil.

The pictures have had fans asking the question; “Is this an imposture?” due to the severe nature of the surgery, but we can confirm that it is Wanderlei himself. It is likely with time that his face will become more like what fans have been used to seeing.

Usain Bolt runs a 9.58 in the 100M at World's

Yes, we all knew that Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt was fast, but WOW! Bolt beat his own world record by .11 seconds and earned gold at the World Championships in Berlin, Germany. Bolt ran a blistering 9.58 seconds. Tyson Gay set a USA 100M record with a 9.71 and finished second, while Bolt's fellow Jamaican Asafa Powell tallied a 9.84 for the bronze. This was the fast 100m in history.

Gegard Mousasi, MMA's next big star

Last night a star was born in Strikeforce. He is "The Dream Catcher," Gegard Mousasi. Mousasi came out very relaxed and he just exploded and left Renato Babalu Sobral wondering what had hit him. It was a perfect introduction to the American fan's who had not seen Mousasi up until this point. I wrote this in my pound-for-pound rankings at the beginning of the month,

Gegard Mousasi is no question one of the best fighters in the world. What did Carano vs Cyborg do for Women's MMA?

One aspect of last night's event that should not be overlooked is: what did the fight do for women's mixed martial arts? The fight was ground breaking. It was full of action. But, did it benefit the sport in the long run?

I am not one to say that because Gina Carano lost that the women's MMA is dead [I actually laugh at that notion], but I don't think Cyborg's victory does anything for the big picture of the sport. Carano was the face of the sport, yes her looks had a lot to do with it, but so did her skill and personality. I would imagine Strikeforce was pulling for a Carano victory. Not only was she the fighter they were hyping, but she is far more marketable.

If an organization is to succeed they need big personalities, they need people that the crowd can relate to and get excited about. It is a show, it isn't just a sport. Dana White understands this fully and it is why the UFC has so much success. While a guy like Anderson Silva is the most exciting fighter on the planet, he isn't necessarily the biggest pay-per view draw. The guys like Brock Lesnar, Forrest Griffin, and Rampage Jackson pull in the big viewing numbers. They have the perfect mix of skill and personality for the business.

When you look at the women's division there doesn't seem to be anyone on Chris Cyborg's level, which could be bad for the sport, but it won't kill it. Carano got us to where we are with women's MMA. If it wasn't for Gina Carano do you really thing a women's bout would have headlined the card? No. It wouldn't have and there likely won't be a women's headliner until Carano is back in the picture.

Cyborg doesn't appeal to the fans. She tried her best to win some over last night by signing as many autographs as possible, but as unfair as it may be her lack of English doesn't create the connection with American fans. It is the sad truth of the business. Cyborg could be a fantastic champion, but as long as none of the fans are connecting with her it won't really matter. No one will be compelled to turn on the television and see a Chris Cyborg fight.

While the women put on a good show last night, I think that it didn't improve or hurt the standing of their sport. It is at a stalemate. The sport has gotten as big as it can get for now, until they get a champion who draws in even more fans. Gina Carano should be applauded to getting women's MMA to where it is, Chris Cyborg should be applauded for winning the title, but if women's MMA is going to continue to grow then Strikeforce needs Carano to come back stronger than ever.

Strikeforce: Carano vs Cyborg Recap

Last night's event made history. It was the first time that a televised mixed martial arts event was headlined by a female bout. Gina Carano and Chris Cyborg did not disappoint as the fight was filled with nonstop action, for the one round it lasted.

In the main event that everyone had been waiting for, Chris Cyborg just overwhelmed Carano with her strength. You could see from the opening minute that Carano was trying everything to hold on. The fight ended with one second left in the first round as Gina Carano curled in the fetal position and Cyborg continued to land power shot after shot onto Carano's head. Cyborg was nothing short of dominant and she was rewarded with the first ever Strikeforce Women's 145lb Championship.

Cyborg's next opponent is expected to be Dutch sensation Marloes Coenen who holds a 16-3 professional record.

The crowd was heavily for Carano so the result was disappointing in many fans eyes, but you can't fault the two women for putting on a great show.

Before the main event we got to see the emergence of a new star in the mixed martial arts world, Gegard Mousasi. Mousasi was the challenger for Strikeforce's Light Heavyweight Champ, Babalu Sobral. It was the first time that Mousasi has stepped into a cage at 205. There was no doubt about who was the better fighter last night. Mousasi steamrolled Babalu and left him unconscious on the mat only a minute into round one. It is unbelievable how many people didn't know Mousasi before last night, but they will know the name now. At only 24 he has a lot of time left.

The other two fights on the televised card were finished before the closing bell as well. It is something the fans like to see. As UFC lightweight Kenny Florian would like to say, "do you like to see fights finished?!" Gilbert Melendez and Fabricio Werdum both took care of business in their fights and ended them.

Werdum opened the televised card against Mike Kyle and he only needed 1:24 until he showcased his jiu-jitsu skills and submitted the challenger. Strikeforce wanted to make sure you knew that Werdum is a heavyweight and he could potentially match up with their new golden boy Fedor in the future.

In the Melendez-Ishida fight, it was action packed. Melendez got a huge response from his home crowd and he rode that to victory. Ishida was persistent at going for the take downs and it almost looked like he wasn't looking to throw punches. The strategy didn't work out for him as Melendez picked apart the Japanese start until he finally got Ishida to the ground and pounded him out.

It was overall a very entertaining card, like Strikeforce tends to put on. And oh yeah... they signed Fedor in case you didn't know.

This Saturday is going to be a historic night in mixed martial arts. Gina Carano and Chris Cyborg become the first women to ever headline a major promotion's card. Even after a severe overhaul, It is going to be a must see night of fights. The card initially had four title fights set for the August 15th card, but injuries and carelessness made it necessary to give the card a facelift. Make no mistake about it though, this card is must see! I highly recommend it to anyone and I hope that you all give Strikeforce a chance if you haven't yet watched one of their events.

Gina Carano is widely regarded as the face of women's mixed martial arts. Carano has incredible technical skill and that has led to her undefeated record of 7-0. Cyboyg is 7-1 and is a brawler from the famed Chute Boxe Academy in Curitiba, Brazil. This is a huge fight for the women's MMA world and the bout should not let anyone down. It is very often to see the women steal the show and now with their five-minute rounds, it will be interesting to see how long Carano and Cyborg keep up the pace. There will be no shortage of action in this fight, but I see Gina Carano having the edge with her technical skill. Pick: Carano via TKO, Round 3

Lightweight Interim Championship: Gilbert Melendez vs Mitsuhiro Ishida

Melendez was set to face off for the Lightweight Championship, but Josh Thompson hasn't fully healed from his leg injury. Melendez will instead defend his interim title against challenger Mitsuhiro Ishida who was the first fighter to ever give Melendez a loss. Ishida is going to be serious competition for Melendez, who's only chance may be to keep the fight standing. Pick: Mitsuhiro Ishida via unanimous decision

Light Heavyweight Championship: Babalu Sobral vs Gegard Mousasi

This fight was moved from Affliction:Trilogy. Sobral vs Mousasi could steal fight of the night honors. Mousasi has all of the ability to be a star in the future, but he is making a leap in weight class and Babalu is no joke of an opponent. I do think that Mousasi will go on to be a champion in Strikeforce and the UFC in the future, but he may just not be ready yet. As much as it pains me to say this, Pick: Babalu via submission, Round 2

Jay Hieron vs Jesse Taylor

Hieron has had a very interesting few weeks. He was initially slated to fight in Affliction: Trilogy, but after the organizations collapse he was going to take on Nick Diaz for the welterweight title. Diaz failed to show up for his drug test and that left Hieron without an opponent. Jesse Taylor steps in on short notice to replace Diaz. The former TUF cast member will have to make magic happen if he is going to give Hieron a decent fight. Hieron is on another level in terms of skill and with the sort notice, Taylor is clearly outmatched. Pick: Jay Hieron via TKO, Round 1

Fabricio Werdum vs Mike Kyle

Orginally scheduled to fight for the heavyweight title, Fabricio Werdum's bout has been lifted up to the main card. Werdum will look to impress and prove that he is still one of the best heavyweights in the world. If Strikeforce doesn't baby Fedor and hand him easy opponents, a win could do wonders for Werdum. Kyle is a heavy handed guy, but his skill set is really just one-dimensional. That won't be enough to keep Werdum away from getting that W. Pick: Werdum via KO, Round 2

Fedor vs Ricco Rodriguez would take place October 10th

Rumors have been running wild about newly signed heavyweight, Fedor Emelianenko's Strikeforce debut. The opponent who is being talked about is former UFC Champion and Celebrity Rehab cast member, Ricco Rodriguez. Ricco Rodriguez wouldn't be afraid to go blow for blow with Fedor (maybe I should refrain from using the term "blow" since Ricco has a cocaine addiction), but this fight would leave many fans disappointed. We had all anticipated that Fedor would fight relevant fighters in his three-fight contract with the Strikeforce organization. We were hoping for Alistair Overeem, Brett Rogers and Fabricio Werdum. Afterall, Fedor's management did say that he wanted to fight Brett Rogers after Josh Barnett tested positive for steroids. What happened to that fight?

Ricco Rodriguez used to be a very good fighter... back in 2001 and 2002 when he beat guys like Randy Couture, Andrei Arlovski, and Jeff Monson. Ricco is far removed from those days, but he doesn't lack confidence. “Yeah I’ve been approached about [the fight], nothing’s final yet but that’s a fight I would definitely want," Rodriguez said. "Fedor is a great fighter but, the training I’ve done at Wolfslair has improved my game tremendously so I think I’ve got a great shot at beating him.”

If this fight does happen on October 10th, I will be upset but not shocked. Fedor is proclaimed as the best in the world, but he really hasn't had a worthy opponent since the summer of 2005. Fedor has been spoon fed his opponents. He had no interest in signing with the UFC because he would have been forced to fight and defend his title. "The Last Emperor" as he calls himself doesn't want a battle. I lost respect for Fedor after the whole contract negotiation. He and his management came across as spoiled brats who wanted to protect their mystique.

Strikeforce needs to be careful with Fedor. They can baby him if they want, and lose respect, but if one of these over the whole nobodies beats their "golden boy," the organization is done. Look at EliteXC and Kimbo Slice. The move to PPV could really hurt Strikeforce as well. Fedor is not the PPV draw that they want you to believe he is. The common American fan really just doesn't care about Fedor Emelianenko.

So go ahead Strikeforce, baby your fighters. You will fail. And to you Fedor, if you want to be the champ you think you are and continue to call yourself the greatest... then fight the best. Don't shy away from the premier organization in the sport.

Titans to Host Shoe Drive before August 15th Preseason Game

It is too often that we hear the negative stories when it comes to the sports world, so I like to show some of the better things going around.

The Tennessee Titans will again host a shoe drive to benefit Nashville-based shoe charity Soles4Souls as the Titans take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at LP Field on Saturday, Aug. 15, at 7 p.m. The Titans are asking fans to bring 'gently worn' shoes to the game and drop them in the seven locations outside each gate of LP Field beginning at 5 p.m. through kickoff.

The Atlanta Falcons who have always wished the best for Michael Vick since his mistep with the law (at least publicly), have released a statement regarding his signing with the Philadelphia Eagles. The statement reads, "Michael is going to a first-class organization and will receive tremendous support from Eagles Chairman/CEO Jeffrey Lurie, Team President Joe Banner, Head Coach Andy Reid and Quarterback Donovan McNabb.

“Michael has been given a good opportunity to restart his career in the NFL, and we wish him well."

The Falcons will host Vick and the Eagles on December 6th. It should be interesting to see the type of welcome Vick receives.

Many people could not tell if my earlier post on MLB Steroid King-pin Jose Canseco was a joke or not. Here is a screenshot from Jose Canseco's Facebook page in which he confirms the news. He will be Rodney King's opponent for the Celebrity Boxing Federation bout on Sept. 12 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Rodney King says he plans donate part of his earnings from the pay-per-view sales of the fight to Boys & Girls Clubs of America. It will stream online at gofightlive.com. You can get tickets by contacting Center Stage Tickets at 800-677-8499.

To be fair, there is also a report that Rodney King will fight former Pennsylvania police officer Simon Aouad at the event (this is all too weird), but with the Canseco comments and what I am hearing, this event will be headlined with Canseco vs Rodney King.

UFC fighter Matt Brown hosts Saturday fundraiser in Ohio for father

UFC fighter and Ohio native Matt Brown is hosting a pig-roast fundraiser in Jamestown, Ohio, on Saturday for the James Brown Medical Fund.

James Brown, Matt's father, is struggling with acute myeloid leukemia, complicated by diabetes and heart failure from a recent chemotherapy session. His health insurance ended last year.

Saturday's event, which is open to the public, includes a full slate of activities as well as an auction with UFC-related items, including some autographed by Brown and fellow UFC fighter Forrest Griffin.

The event takes place from noon to 10 p.m. at Morris' Pond on Cottonwood Road in Jamestown with food (two pigs will be roasted), six live bands, kids games, pony rides, a cornhole tournament, bikini carwash and other activities. Alcoholic beverages will not be provided, so the event is BYOB. Attendees don't need to bring anything, though everyone is welcome to bring a favorite dish to share with fellow partygoers.

Brown simply hopes the small-town event can bring some much-needed help to the family.

"It's been tough," said Brown, who learned his father was seriously ill just a week after a scheduled June bout with Anthony Johnson fell through. "It worked out well that the fight didn't take place."

Brown said his dad has always been proud of his fighting career, which included a successful stint on "The Ultimate Fighter 7" and a 3-1 record in the UFC.

"He was really happy I was doing something with my life besides going to jail and getting drunk everyday," Brown said. "He was supportive ... and saw the positive impact it had (on me)."

He's now hoping the fight community can rally around his father, a former machine-shop owner who initially was told he had only two weeks to live. Now slowly doing better, though, the medical bills are starting to mount.

PETA Statement on Eagles Signing Michael Vick

PETA is an outrageous organization. I often wonder what type of drugs they use and where they get off thinking they are so much better than everyone else. They always seem to be the first to point the finger and cry for someones head. They accomplish nothing. All they do is add fuel to a fire and make a bigger issue out of a situation.

Here is what PETA had to say about Michael Vick, "PETA and millions of decent football fans around the world are disappointed that the Philadelphia Eagles have chosen to sign a man who hanged dogs from trees, electrocuted them with jumper cables, held them underwater until they drowned in his swimming pool, and even threw his own family dogs into the fighting pit to be torn to shreds while he laughed. What sort of message does this send to young fans who care about animals and don't want to see them be harmed?

PETA certainly hopes that Vick has learned his lesson and feels truly remorseful for his crimes—but since he's given no public indication that that's the case, only time will tell. At this point, all Eagles fans can do is cross their fingers and hope that they won't ever have to explain to their sons and daughters what a "rape rack" is and why their favorite player was using one, as Falcons fans once had to. "

Give me a break. Decent football fans? What about decent human beings who believe in second chances. The people who have their minds right realize that no one is perfect. If you think Vick doesn't deserve a second chance or that you wish harm on Vick, look back in your past. How many times has someone come to defend you? How many times has someone helped you out when you were down?

I can't handle when people don't use their heads. Some people just throw out nonsense and hope it sticks. Michael Vick deserves a second chance just as much as you or I.

Vick has owned up to his mistake. He is realistic in his expectations. He had said, "After a two-yr hiatus, you can't go out & be a starter for a football team. As much God-given ability as I had, I couldn't do it." He has also stepped up to accept responsibility. He won't use culture as an excuse and Vick is now focused on making a difference, "If I can help more animals than I hurt, then I am contributing."

The person who deserves the biggest applause in all of this is Tony Dungy. Without Dungy, Vick would have had a much harder road back. Dungy is a smart man. He understands human error and redemption. Hats off to Dungy for standing by Vick and providing him with the mentor that he likely never had.

The best line from the introductory press conference was when a media member asked Dungy if he was taking a risk with Michael Vick. Dungy looked the man right in the eyes and said what we should all be saying, "I did what I hoped someone would do for me if I made a mistake."

The wait is over. QB Michael Vick has signed a two-year deal with the Philadelphia Eagles. Vick is eligible to play in the last two games of the preseason and a decision will be made on his future by week 6.

RUMOR: Fedor Emelianenko vs Ricco Rodriguez in the works

According to multiple reports today, it seems like Fedor's Strikeforce debut may be a let down. While people were anticipating Fedor vs Brett Rogers, Fabricio Werdum, or Alistair Overeem it appears that Strikeforce will give Fedor an easy welcome by matching him up against Ricco Rodriguez. It's interesting that Rodgriguez is in this headline, the former Celebrity Rehad cast member joins another Celebrity Rehab cast off Rodney King in todays fight news.

The rumor was first brought to attention by Gorgeous George on MMAJunkie Radio.

I know I wouldn't be the only one disappointed by this match-up, but I shouldn't be too surprised. Fedor and his management have found ways to bring him opponents past their prime and haven't brought in a real test. This follows that trend.

While it is only a rumor at this point that the fight is in the works, be sure to check back for any developing info.

REPORT: Jose Canseco to Fight Rodney King In Philadelphia on September 12th

On September 12th in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Jose Canseco will be fight against Rodney King. The bout has not been officially announced, but I will update everyone when more information becomes available. As of now it would headline the Celebrity Boxing Federation's event.

Jose Canseco has had his fair share of fights already, same goes for Rodney King (with all due respect). Canseco fought Vai Sikahema in 2008, and Canseco was knocked out by the much shorter fighter in the first round. Canseco also made his mixed martial arts debut at DREAM 9 against the giant Hong Man Choi, Canseco waqs once again beat in the first round.

It has become clear that Canseco is desperate for money and he will do whatever it takes to make an extra dollar. Everyone should know who Rodney King is. He is the man who was brutally attacked by police officers. During the LA Riots King had said, "People, I just want to say, you know, can we all get along? Can we get along? Can we stop making it, making it horrible for the older people and the kids?...It’s just not right. It’s not right. It’s not, it’s not going to change anything. We’ll, we’ll get our justice....Please, we can get along here. We all can get along. I mean, we’re all stuck here for a while. Let’s try to work it out. Let’s try to beat it. Let’s try to beat it. Let’s try to work it out."

Well, it seems like we will be seeing Rodney King "beat it out" against Jose Canseco in early September. It may be a freak show, but I am going to love it. I predict Canseco by another first round loss.

A Message To Red Sox Nation: The Sky Is NOT Falling In!

Chicken Little is running wild in Red Sox Nation! I have a message for The Nation — relax, the sky is not falling in.

Inhale… exhale. Inhale… exhale. Take deep breaths.

Like every Red Sox fan, I am disappointed by what unfolded in Tampa and New York last week; however, I am mindful of GM Theo Epstein’s declaration that his goal is to build a club that will reach the playoffs and then excel in the post-season. The goal isn’t winning the AL East, it is winning the World Series.

The Red Sox cannot print money like the New York Yankees. They don’t have a brand new, state-of-the-art stadium that was subsidized by the city, nor do they have a lucrative cable television deal in the most populous city in the country. They can’t compete with the Yankees in terms of payroll, and over the course of a long season the difference in payrolls will often (not always) make the difference in the divisional battle.

The Sox ownership and front office are pragmatic in this respect. They understand the Yankees can AND WILL outspend them, so they have developed a formula that is based on winning the wild card and having players on the roster who: 1) are capable of beating any team in baseball in a seven-game series, and 2) have a track record of post-season success.

The team has struggled in recent weeks, but the organization has developed sufficient depth in the minor league system to hold the fort until the big league club turns the corner. That depth allowed Epstein to trade for C / 1B Victor Martinez, who provides a productive bat for the heart of the lineup for this season and future seasons… it has also provided a constant flow of prospects to help offset the injuries to Daisuke Matsuzaka, Tim Wakefield and a handful of everyday players who have been missing from the lineup.

Daniel Bard. Clay Buchholz. Junichi Tazawa. Aaron Bates. Josh Reddick.

And the depth may enable the front office to make more deals as the trade deadline still lies ahead on the horizon.

ALL teams experience ebbs and flows throughout the season… just because the Red Sox are currently struggling does not mean we should assume they will continue to do so.

Typically, for every ebb there is a flow.

In 2004, the team played .500-ball from June 5th through August 6th. The club was just nine games over .500 (and 10.5 games out of first place) when play began on August 7th… thereafter, they hit their stride, going 40-15 down the stretch, and carried a sizeable dose of momentum with them into the playoffs.

In 2007, the club barely played .500-ball for the month of August (15-13) and endured a stretch in mid-September where they lost five-of-six games (two of those losses came against the Yankees)… and although the Sox led the AL East nearly wire-to-wire, they saw their once-formidable 11.5 game lead shrink to 1.5 games on two occasions during the last two weeks of the season. Callers on talk-radio were panicked.

As always, health will be critical as the team battles for the post-season.

Assuming no major adverse health developments in the next seven weeks, the Sox should only get healthier as Matsuzaka and Wakefield will both return to the rotation by the end of the month… and both will be well-rested as the playoff push begins its final month. Josh Beckett, Jon Lester, Tim Wakefield, Daisuke Matsuzaka and Brad Penny should lead the charge into the post-season as the calendar turns to September.

I like the Red Sox chances of making the playoffs — much moreso than I like those of Tampa and Texas. And I’ll take my chances in the Beckett-Sabathia and Lester-Burnett matchups in October.

The pendulum swings both ways. Has anything happened that was completely unexpected or that is completely insurmountable? No.

Teams get cold. Teams get hot. As for me, I would prefer to see the Sox struggle in early August rather than watch them implode in October.
